I've been photographing the Davis family for years—I even shot Mckenzie and Magnum's wedding—so their annual fall session at Morrison Ranch is always a highlight for me. This year we chased golden hour with their two kiddos, Ridge (2) and Weslie (5), and it was pure chaos in the best way. Watching these two grow up through my lens has been such a gift. Ridge is at that wild toddler stage where everything is an adventure, and Weslie's got this sweet big sister energy mixed with her own independent spirit. They're at ages where they're genuinely fun to be around, and you can tell they actually like each other—which isn't always a given with siblings.
Their Fall Session at Morrison Ranch
Morrison Ranch is one of my favorite spots in Gilbert for family sessions, especially in the fall when the light gets softer and everything feels a little more magical. The tree-lined paths, that gorgeous pond, and the green grass make it feel way less desert-y than most of Arizona. It's one of those rare Gilbert locations that actually feels and looks a little more like fall!
Mckenzie and Magnum are the kind of parents who let their kids be kids. No forcing smiles or making everyone sit still…just real moments of them being a family. Ridge wanted to explore everything, Weslie was showing off her latest tricks, and we just rolled with it. That's when the best photos happen anyway.
Golden hour light filtering through those trees? Perfect. This family makes my job easy because they genuinely love being together, and it shows in every frame. Year after year, they show up ready to have fun, and that's exactly what we do.
Tips for Family Sessions with Young Kids
Choose Kid-Friendly Locations: Morrison Ranch is perfect because there's space to run and explore. Kids don't have to sit still—they can just be themselves.
Golden Hour is Your Friend: That warm afternoon light makes everyone look good and keeps the vibe relaxed. No harsh shadows, no squinting.
Let Them Move: The best moments happen when kids are allowed to play and interact naturally. Forcing poses never works with this age group.
