Arizona Desert Engagement Photographer | Valerie + Brian
Brian contacted me a while back about shooting his surprise proposal to Valerie. I was like, "Heck yes!" I have shot many engagement sessions, but this would be my first proposal! Brian and Valerie were here on vacation from Iowa and she was under the impression the photos were to celebrate their 1-year anniversary and take advantage of the beautiful Arizona desert. We chose the Salt River and it DID NOT disappoint!
The Surprise Proposal at Salt River
We shot in the evening, and Valerie was totally clueless. She thought we were doing anniversary photos, nothing more. Brian had everything planned perfectly! When Brian got down on one knee, Valerie was completely shocked. Tears, excitement, total surprise—all of it. And then, like something out of a movie, the Salt River wild horses showed up in the background right during the proposal. I've seen those horses at other spots before, but never at this location. Talk about perfect timing. It truly was the ideal spot to propose.
After she said yes (obviously!), Valerie's parents came out to see, they too were so excited! Watching everyone celebrate together—Brian, Valerie, her parents—made the whole evening even more special.
We continued shooting after the proposal, and these two were on cloud nine. The excitement was still fresh, and you can see it in every photo. The Salt River at sunset, the wild horses, the surprise, the celebration—it all came together perfectly.

Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal
Pick a Meaningful Location: The Salt River gave Brian the dramatic Arizona desert backdrop he wanted, and it delivered in every way.
Have a Cover Story: The anniversary photos excuse worked perfectly. Valerie had no idea what was coming.
Include Family if You Can: Having her parents there made the moment even more meaningful.
Trust Your Photographer: Shooting a proposal is different than a regular session—communication beforehand is key so everyone knows the plan.
