Brittany + Caleb's Desert Botanical Garden Engagement

Golden hour desert engagement photos Phoenix botanical garden

Brittany is my niece, so when she asked me to shoot her engagement session, I was obviously all in. We met at Desert Botanical Garden in May for sunset photos, and the light that evening was amazing!

The thing about shooting family is that there's already a built-in comfort level. Brittany and Caleb didn't need any direction to look natural together - they're just genuinely affectionate and playful with each other. I mean...c'mon. That makes my job about a thousand times easier when couples actually like each other and aren't stiff in front of the camera. 😉

Why I Love Shooting at Desert Botanical Garden

The variety. You're not stuck with one backdrop - you've got desert trails, garden paths, different types of cacti and succulents, and those incredible mountain silhouettes in the background. It's also well-maintained, so you don't have to worry about random trash or weeds ruining your shots.

For couples who want that classic Arizona desert vibe without hiking into the middle of nowhere, this spot is perfect.

What's Next for Brittany + Caleb!?…I'm shooting their wedding this spring, and I'm already excited about it. There's something special about documenting these milestones for family - I get to be part of the story in a different way than I would with regular clients.

Tips for Desert Botanical Garden Engagement Sessions

  • Book sunset. The light is unbeatable, and the temperatures are way more manageable than midday. May through September can be brutal during the day, so plan accordingly.

  • Wear comfortable shoes. You'll be walking on gravel paths and potentially uneven terrain. Leave the stilettos at home unless you want to spend half the session hobbling around.

  • Bring water. Even at sunset, the desert is hot. Stay hydrated, especially if you're shooting during warmer months.

  • Coordinate colors with the landscape. Neutrals, earthy tones, and jewel tones photograph beautifully against the desert backdrop. Avoid bright neons that will compete with the natural environment.
